A UN diplomat has revealed that the joint UN-Arab League envoy is willing to give President Bashar Assad's regime a little more time to stop the violence. Kofi Annan's plan includes daily two-hour halts to the fighting, so that humanitarian aid can reach civilians; and the withdrawal of troops and heavy military equipment from populated areas. The deadline is April 10th. The question is: what happens if the deadline isn't met? Because the indications are that the violence is if anything increasing. Jeremy Greenstock, Britain's former ambassador to the UN, isn't very optimistic about the prospects for Kofi Annan's peace plan.
"We're still in very uncertain territory, is to what the Syrian regime will actually implement even if they say verbally that they've agreed to it. Kofi Annan didn't have many cards to play. He was asked to see whether he could stop the killing, but it leaves the politics in a very uncertain place."
Can there be any genuine solution to the situation in Syria until the Assad regime is removed?
