I want to discuss why and how films find themselves in this premier league of pictures. I'm joined by the film critic Ian Hayden Smith, editor of the International Film Guide. So, an event film, is it just about budget?
"I think part of it is about budget. And, now, I should say we should draw a distinction between the event film and the blockbuster film. The blockbuster really came about with Jaws and Star Wars in the 1970s. With the event film you can trace back to the dawn of cinema itself. It's something that people look forward to. But since the 1970s and the blockbuster, I think the film studios have realised that they can profit by drawing on the audiences' anticipation of a forthcoming film, particularly if it's been based on something they've already known, something about whether it's a theme ride or computer game, or more often than not, book adaptations. But I think what's really fascinating with the current incarnation of the event film is the way that so much money is being spent.
