I'm Jon Donnison and for this BBC World Service Assignment, we're in the Mediterranean for an extreme sport - a race that will cover a territory from top to bottom, the Gaza Marathon.
"Now, you're one of the favourites. What time are you going for today?"
"Three hours. Would have been two and a half, but it's too windy. Good luck."
"Gaza Marathon is about to start. Runners, we are going to start running in five, four, three, two, one."
Well, that's it. They are off 42 kilometres, 26 miles from the border here with Israel, all the way south across this Palestinian territory to Rafah and the gateway to Egypt. Some of these runners have high hopes and some of them, at least to look at them, frankly, have no hope. But over the last few days, I've been following their final preparations for a unique race across one of the world's most notorious conflict zones.
I've come to the house of half-brothers Mohamed and Bashir who train six days a week. They are both 46 and in Gaza that's pretty old. Over half the strip's fast-growing population of 1.7 million are children.“大家早上好。
