For a while, anything looked possible, Arsenal played like they believed, and with a 3-0 half-time lead, everyone else had to buy into the prospect of them pulling off one of THE great comebacks, too. But the intensity impasse of their first half effort, which had the crowd on their feet and left Italians looking shell-shocked, couldn't quite be maintained for the full 90 minutes. Laurent Koscielny headed home the first after just six minutes. Tomáš Rosický made it two after 25. And shortly before the break, Robin van Persie added the third from the penalty spot. Pride restored for Arsenal, but their awful first-leg performance in Milan has cost them dearly.
Well, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger was indeed proud of his team's efforts.
"We restored good performance tonight, and we are disappointed because we touched qualification. We had the chances and we didn't do it, but we were very close. And I felt that when we tired in midfield, we had no opportunities on the bench. 当时看来，任何事都可能发生。上半场3-0领先，阿森纳信心十足继续踢球。其他人也都认同他们大有希望，并能赢来大翻盘。阿森纳上半场火力十足高度紧张，球迷都兴奋地站着，令意大利人们惊魂不止，但是火力不可能维持得了整场90分钟的比赛。开场6分钟后科斯切尔尼首先头球破门，25分钟后罗西基再进一球，上半场快结束钱，范佩西再进一粒点球，比分改写为3-0。阿森纳重拾尊严，但是首轮比赛对战AC米兰时的糟糕表现也让他们付出了沉重代价。
阿森纳主帅温格为球队的努力深感自豪。
“今晚我们又恢复了优秀表现，遗憾的是我们本可够及出线资格，我们有了机会却未能做到，而且离它已经很近。中场球员劳累的时候，板凳上又没有合适的替补，我很遗憾。但除了这些，球员们已经上演了一场完美极好的比赛。我们只想好好祝贺整个球队。”
