Here in Britain, four in five people - that's 80% - would feel embarrassed to tell someone they were bad at reading and writing while just more than half - that's 56% - would feel embarrassed about saying the same of their maths skills. The figures are the result of a survey commissioned by a group called National Numeracy which says that millions of people are struggling to understand their payslips or calculate their money in shops. In a moment we'll talk to a maths teacher, but first Dee Sebastian, popped outside Bush House to ask people if they were good at maths.
"I'm Emily."
"And what are you studying, Emily?"
"History."
"And would you say you're good at maths?"
"Not overly, no."
"And do you mind saying you're not good at maths?"
"No, I don't mind at all. I'd like to be better, but, yeah, I'd like to remember what I studied all those years ago. It's completely slipped my mind now."
"A quick maths test. If petrol costs one pound a litre and then goes up by 50% and down by 50%, what does it cost?"
"75 pence."
"It's pretty good. And here's another one. Four times seven."
"28."
"So do you think you're better at maths than you thought?"
"A little bit. Yeah. I didn't realise it would be so easy, but yeah."
