Hollywood's annual tribute to itself is a star-studded extravaganza where film studios honour their finest work. The major categories like the highly-coveted Best Picture Award represent the studios' most artistic and most imaginative films, but not, it seems their most profitable. The nine films nominated for Best Picture have earned a respectable sum over $900 million worldwide. They've averaged about $100 million each. But the nine biggest box office hits have earned $7.25 billion worldwide and they've averaged over $800 million each. That staggering sum shows that the studios are, above all, businesses. Making art is nice, but the real money is in boy wizards, vampire romance and giant robots.
If the studios are businesses though, what business are they in? Surprisingly, it's not making movies. Studios don't produce movies. Production companies produce movies. They are the ones who develop scripts, hire directors, cast actors and actually shoot film. The studios, broadly speaking, are in the rental business. They rent production companies, the sound stages needed to film movies. They rent the props to dress the sets. They rent their distribution system to get movies into theatres, and their marketing departments to get paying customers into seats. Most important, they rent the money needed to pay for all of these. That financial muscle has always given the studios their power. Making a movie is an expensive undertaking. Controlling the money let the studios pick which movies were made, who became a star and who became a has-been.
