Chelsea took the lead through Juan Mata, but two goals from Ezequiel Lavezzi and one from Edinson Cavani gave the host a precious first-leg lead. Watching for the BBC was John Murray.
I think it was a fair reflection of the game that we saw here tonight. Chelsea, I would say, were rather fortunate to find themselves ahead in the game through Mata's goal, it was helped by a terrible bounce for the Napoli defender. But they held the lead for only a little over ten minutes before Lavezzi equalised, good finish, that I thought. And it was 2-1 Napoli at half-time after Cavani stole in to score. That was badly defended, as was the case for Napoli's third goal immediately after Chelsea's best spell of the match, David Luiz was at fault as Lavezzi made it 3-1, which means Napoli are clearly favourites to make the quarter-finals in this competition for what will be the first time in their history.
Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas says the failure to take their chances was their undoing at the Stadio San Paolo.
"It's a negative result, of course, but a result that we're sure that we can turn around at the Bridge due to the amount of chances that we had during the game. Again, being more clinical and being more efficient in front of goal was the difference between the two teams. Both teams with almost the same amount of opportunities, one with 15, another one with 16.
