沪江专访枫华高级中学校长Mark Butcher:圆你一个国际梦

        你有出国梦吗?你为出国做过什么准备吗?近日,沪江网有幸请到中加合作的枫华高级中学校长Mark Butcher先生做客沪江,告诉你出国都要做哪些准备,为你答疑解惑,圆你一个国际梦。
        1. We just talk a little bit about your personal experience like how you came to China, how you started this business.我们刚才说到了您的个人经历,比如您是如何来到中国的?您是如何开始您的事业的?
        Well, which time I came to China, the first time?你说的是我第几次来到中国?第一次?
        The very first time.对,最早的一次。
        First time I came here was in 1946. I was just a little baby. My father came here in 1932. My mother came here in 1938. I have an elder brother who was born in China. Both my parents during the war and my brother were interned by the Japanese for 3.5 years in Weifang, in the Japanese War Camp. I was conceived in that camp and so I tell everybody else that I was made in China. But if we haven't been with the help of our Chinese friends we will never have survived. There were shortages of food, very little food in the camp. In fact, my brother’s favorite treat in today just has been a slice of bread, some sort on that. That was a real treat. We were there for 3.5 years after the war was over, and my mother was 7-months pregnant with me in the camp, went to England. And when I was 2-month-old, we came back to China. We lived in Lijiang. We lived there until 1950. The first language I spoke was Chinese and I learned English later, but I forgot all my Chinese. After we left Lijiang, we went to India, and from India, we moved to Japan. My sister was born in Japan, and from Japan moved to Boston, the United States. We later moved up to a little town, town of 3000. We were there just for a few years. Then we moved to Hong Kong. I went to school in Hong Kong. From Hong Kong, we moved to Thailand, my first term was in Thailand. And then I went to my boarding school in Vietnam and I graduated from high school in Vietnam. 我第一次来到中国是在1946年,当时我还只是个小婴儿。我的父亲是1932年来到中国的,母亲是在1938年来的。我的哥哥是在中国出生的。我的父母和我的哥哥都曾被日本人拘禁在潍坊长达三年半。而我的母亲就是在那里怀的我,所以我常跟人说,我是“中国制造”。如果没有中国友人的帮助,我们是不可能活下来的,因为那时食物非常短缺。直到现在,我哥哥最爱的食物还是面包片,这在当时就是一种奢侈了。战争结束后我们在那待了三年半。当我母亲怀孕到七个月时,我们离开了那儿去了英国。我两个月大的时候,我们又回到了中国,住在了丽江。我们在丽江一直待到了1950年。我会的第一种语言是汉语,后来我才学得英语,但是现在我已经把汉语全忘了。我们离开丽江后就去了印度,后来又从印度去了日本。我的妹妹是在日本出生的。然后我们从日本搬到了波士顿的一个小镇,人口只有3000人左右。我们在那儿又住了几年。之后,我们搬去了香港,我在香港上的学。接着,我们从香港去了泰国,我在泰国又上了一学期的学,又从泰国去了越南,我在越南读的寄宿制学校,并在越南高中毕业。
        Just like the whole life of you is in Asia.听起来,您的整个生活都是在亚洲度过的。
        Yeah, I grew up in Asia. So I always want to come back to Asia. I prefer Asia to Europe. Here, I feel very much at home.是的,我是在亚洲长大的。所以我一直就想回到亚洲来,比起欧洲,我更喜欢亚洲,这里就像我的家一样。
        2. What’s the most attractive thing about Asia, do you think?那您认为,亚洲最吸引您的是什么?
        People. They are very very friendly. I love the country; I love the people. Our family knows a lot of Chinese people. So I always want to come back here. Back in 1960, I wrote down five goals.1960 that was during a time caused revolution. One of my goals was to come to China and teach. So I tell my kids, if you have a dream, follow that dream, because it can probably happen. It has always been my dream to come to China. So I did my career in Canada after I went to university in Canada. So I was a principal in Canada about 21 years and I taught in Canada about 32 years old together. Then I retired and I came here in 2000. First, I was in Daqing and went to a public school. I just want to see what it is like in a Chinese school. Later, I went to Shandong and I was involved in secondary school there. I got very sick, SARS, and I have been in hospital for over a month. Then I went back to Canada. And this opportunity came here and I jumped it up. Then I came here in 2003 and I started a school and I’ve here since.最吸引我的是亚洲的人民。亚洲人都非常非常友善。我喜欢这些国家,喜欢这里的人。我们家认识很多中国人,所以,我总是想回到这里来。1960年的时候,我写过五个目标,1960年是一个变革的时候。而我的目标之一就是到中国来教书。所以,我跟我的学生说,如果你有什么梦想,那就去追逐你的梦想,说不定什么时候它就能实现。我就一直梦想来中国。所以,我在加拿大大学毕业后开始工作,当了21年的校长,一共教书32年。2000年退休后,我就来到了这里。我先是在大庆的一所学校教书,我只是想知道中国的学校是怎么运作的。后来,我去了山东,在那里的一所中学教书。在那里,我得了场重病,非典,在医院住了一个多月,之后我就回到了加拿大。而现在又有机会回到中国来,我就义无反顾地来了。我是2003年来的,并开办了这所学校。

        3. What do you feel like the most different thing about the Chinese students and the students in Canada? You’ve been teaching in Canada for many years.您在加拿大也有很多年的教学经验,那么,您认为中国学生和加拿大学生最大的不同之处在哪?
        I think, probably the attitude toward teachers is really different. There’re lots of kids back in Canada too. But it’s quite different here in China. For instance, if I was walking on the street in my home town, there is student on other side of the street, even if on the same side of the street, he might be ignoring, just walk passed. They are cool to the teacher. Here, if I see a student on the other side of the street, quite often they cross the street, come over say hi. You know the same thing is you are walking in the hall, there are always “good morning, teacher” “good morning, how are you”. That’s really neat. And actually the most rewarding part of my career has been these students in China. I enjoy that more than any other part of my career. 我想最大的不同可能是对待老师的态度。在加拿大,如果我在街对面看到一个学生,甚至就在同一条街上和他迎面走过,他可能都会熟视无睹地走过去。加拿大的学生对待老师比较疏远。而在中国,如果我在街上看到一个学生,他就会穿过马路,走过来跟我打招呼。同样地,在学校里,经常会听见学生跟你问好。这一点让人感觉很棒。这些中国学生就是对我事业的最大回报,比起任何其他东西来,我更享受这种感觉。
        I feel a little bit proud, actually.我也感到很自豪啊。
        You should be. 应该的。
        4. From what I heard is like students in China, they are really good students. They obey the teachers. But we are a little bit afraid of the thing about they lack of the creativity during their study. I believe, maybe that’s one of your reasons to start international school.中国的学生都是好学生,他们非常听话,但是缺少创造性。我想,这大概也是您要开办国际学校的一个原因吧。
        That’s correct. When I was in Daqing teaching in a public school, I notice that students never ask why. If I said something, they believe it. They never question it. But in West, kids always ask why, why, why. And they will accept it if you come up with good reason and they accept most things. Whereas here I find students just accept it. And if teacher says it’s right, that’s right. What I was trying to do is I try to get students start to think, put together their own thoughts. It’s one of the biggest differences between Canadian or West education and Chinese. Chinese education is what called converging thinking. Everybody comes together, they come out one answer. And the answer is the one on the text book or what their teacher tells them. We try to do the opposite. We do diverging thinking. We say you come with your own answer because we believe sometimes it has more than one answer to a problem, and sometimes it has more than one way to answer a problem. Stop on a same answer. So we try to encourage kids to be cracker. 你说的很对。我在大庆教书的时候,我发现学生们从来都不会问为什么。我说什么,他们就信什么。他们从不提问。但在西方,孩子们总是不停地问为什么。当你说的有道理的时候,他们才会接受。而这里的学生,不管我说什么,都会通通接受,只要你说是对的,他们就认为是对的。我想做的就是让学生们开始自己思考,让他们有自己的想法。中国教育和加拿大或者西方教育最大的不同之一就是中国是一种聚合式的思考方式,所有人聚到一起,想出一个答案。而这个答案就是教科书上写的或者是老师教的。我们要做的恰恰相反。我们鼓励发散性思维。我们让学生有自己的想法,因为一个问题的答案可能不只一个,解决问题的方法也可能不只一种。我们不要那种统一的标准答案,而是鼓励学生们自己思考。
        Would you say you’ve reached a success now?那您认为您成功了吗?
        In most records, yes. By time they get English well, certainly. You know, we look at the successful rate of our students in university, yes, well means.从很多方面来看,我们成功了。我们的学生英语水平都很好,很多学生都进入了大学。
        5. Would you say this is the biggest difference between your school and local public Chinese school?那这是您的学校和中国本地的学校最大的不同吗?
        That’s one of the biggest differences. The other big difference I will say is in extracurricular activities. We will not only live on mark’s report and the classroom’s report and discover how you find information, teacher helps you to find information rather than be the information itself. But outside the classroom is very important too. Like friends being involved, varieties of sports, varieties of clubs. Researches show that students are most successful are not necessary won the highest marks; they are the ones are most involved in school because they’ve learned skills like leadership, teamwork, things are vary valuable as you probably know. 这不能说是最大的不同,我们还有其他的不同之处,比如课外活动。我们不仅仅看学生的课堂表现和成绩,我们关注学生是如何发现问题,老师可以帮助学生,但是我们更关注的是发现问题的能力而不是问题本身。课外活动也很重要。学生们要积极参与各种体育活动、各种俱乐部活动。有研究表明,那些最成功的学生并不是成绩最好的而是最积极参与活动的,因为这些学生从中学到了许多宝贵的技能,比如领导力,团队合作等。
