3. DNA doublehelix DNA
4. Apollo 10capsule
5. V2 rocketengine V2
6.Stephenson's Rocket
7. Pilot ACEComputer
8. Steamengine
10. Electrictelegraph 电报机
The public hasvoted the X-ray machine as the best invention, ahead of the
Apollo10 space capsule and Stephenson's Rocket。
Out of nearly50,000 votes cast, one in five people named it for having made
thegreatest impact on the past, present and future。
Ten of themost significant objects in science, engineering, technology
andmedicine were selected for the vote. Information on all the itemsis found at
the Science Museum in London。
The firstthree positions were filled by medical inventions or
discoveries, the X-ray machine being followed by the discoveries of penicillinand
the DNA double helix structure。
X-rays providedthe first possibility of looking inside someone's body
withoutcutting them open--a massive medical advance。
The particularX-ray machine in question was a "do-it-youself" experiment by
afather and son who were so inspired by news of the discovery of theX-ray that
they set about building the equipment in their ownhome。
Museum curatorKatie Maggs said: "It's very inspirational to budding
scientists tolearn that an invention now declared the most important in
worldhistory could be pioneered by enthusiastic amateurinventors."
Professor AndyAdam, president of the Royal College of Radiologists, was
delightedto learn of the result。
He said theX-ray machine had revolutionised medical practice and that
thetechnology had now advance so much that we are reaching the era ofthe
"transparent patient"。
CultureSecretary Ben Bradshaw said: "Any competition that pits the Apollo10
spacecraft against Stephenson's Rocket, and the DNA double helixagainst the
Model T Ford, is bound to provide talking pointsaplenty. "
The poll wasconducted as part of the Science Museum's events to mark
itscentenary。
