英语阅读：vetting process审批程序
自从美国总统奥巴马入主白宫以来，美国政府的人事任命频出状况。例如奥巴马提名的卫生部长候选人汤姆•达施勒因被查出偷漏税14.6万美元而临阵退出。而最近人们又惊奇地发现，本月初奥巴马刚刚任命的首席信息执行官(CIO)韦克•孔德劳原来是个贼。于是越来越多的人开始怀疑白宫的审批程序。请看新华社的报道：
But the latest revelation once again raises questions about the White House
vetting process, which has failed to expose problems that have torpedoed several
nominees.
但最近被揭露的这起事件又引发了人们对白宫审批程序的质疑，该程序未能及时发现导致数名候选人落马的诸多问题。
在上面的报道中，vetting process就是指“审批程序”，也写作vetting procedure。而negative vetting
process则是指不反对或不提出修订即属通过的议决程序。In a statement, Judd Gregg said it had become
apparent during the vetting process that his appointment would not
work.(贾德•格雷格在声明中称在审批程序中可以很明显的看出他不会得到任命)。这项法案必须go through a vetting
process(经过审批)，很幸运最终survive the vetting process(通过了审批程序)。
Vet在这里的意思是“检审”。Someone should vet this report before it goes
out.(这篇报道发表之前应该有人对它进行详查)，因此Jim受命vet a manuscript(检查手稿)，并且vet the proposed
contract(检查提交的合同)。
Vet作名词时最常见的意思是“兽医”，此外，它还常用来指“老兵”。Vet 意为老兵时, 通常会在前面加上军种, 例如：He is an
Army/Navy vet.(他是一位自陆/海军退伍的老兵)。
