Few people can stand for the spirit of earlierAmerica as much as Benjamin Franklin. He livedthrough almost the whole of the 18th century. Hewas born six years after the century began and diedten years before it ended. During this time he sawthe American colonies grow from tiny settlementsinto a nation and he also contributed much to the new state. He was deeply interested inscience and natural history and his experiments with the electricity and lightning led directly tothe invention of the lightning rod. He was involved in a number ofnprojects in his native Philadelphia, including thesetting up of a library, and a university, a philosophical society and a fire-prevention service.He worked hard to enable American colonies to gain independence from Britain. He is still fondly remembered by Americans as one of the creators of theUnited States.
