TEXT: International powers agreed Saturday that a national unity government should be set up in Syria to resolve the conflict between President Bashar al-Assad and opposition forces trying to oust him. Peace envoy Kofi Annan said that the government should include members of Assad's administration and the opposition. PEACE ENVOY KOFI ANNAN, SAYING: "It is for the Syrian people to determine the future of the country." At a press briefing after the meetings Annan was asked about the role of the government in the transition. PEACE ENVOY KOFI ANNAN, SAYING: "I think that the government will have to be formed through discussions and negotiations and by mutual consent. And I will doubt that the Syrians that have fought so hard for their independence to be able to have a say in how they are governed and who governs them, will select people with blood on their hands to lead them." U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday strongly endorsed a new international plan for a political transition in Syria, saying it would send a clear message to President Bashar al-Assad. TEXT: A few hours after Egypt's new president Mohamed Mursi is sworn into office he attends a military ceremony in Cairo. The military council under Field Marshall Hussein Tantawi have ruled the most populous Arab state since Hosni Mubarak's overthrow in February 2011. The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces has guided a chaotic and sometimes bloody transition since Mubarak's overthrow. At the ceremony the military hands over power. EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT, MOHAMED MURSI, SAYING: "Today, the Egyptian people, the Arab and Islamic world and the whole world are witnessing a-never before seen, unique, model of how power is transferred from the Egyptian armed forces -- by the will of the Egyptian people -- to an elected, civilian power." An army decree on June 17 clipped presidential powers, denying the head of state his role as supreme commander of the armed forces with the right to decide on war and peace. Brief: Chinese president Hu Jintao attended a banquet in his honor on Saturday.Hu was in Hong Kong to oversee the swearing-in of a new chief executive on Sunday, when current leader Donald Tsang will be replaced by Leung Chun-ying. After the dinner, the Chinese leader watched a gala which featured a kung-fu show and an acrobatic performance. At the end of the show, Hu went up on to the stage and shook hands with the performers. Then the Chinese president joined the gala performers to sing "Ode to the Motherland," a well-known patriotic song which pays tribute to Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China.

An unusual weekly address from President Barack Obama from the fire-ravaged state of Colorado. The president, who had been given an Air Force One fly-over of the devastated area said firefighters were working round the clock to contain the blaze and pledged continued support for the state. U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "We've been engaging in some unprecedented coordination between federal, state, and local communities to try to bring this fire under control." The so-called Waldo Canyon fire - one of Colorado's worst-ever wildfires - has been raging for a week. By Friday, it had scorched around 17,000 acres of timber and brush, much of it in the Pike National Forest west of Colorado Springs. Lighter winds recently have helped more than 1,000 firefighters currently trying to corral the flames.
